Investments in Mazatlán Sinaloa, Baluarte Bridge: the jewel of the crown in the carretero project

Palmito, Sinaloa, Mexico - Once completed, the Baluarte River Bridge will not only be the tallest bridge in North America, but the largest cable-stayed bridge in the world; Surpassing with this the viaduct of Millau in France.

It is the jewel of the crown of the road project that combines the largest bridges and tunnels ever undertaken in North America. Known as the Durango-Mazatlan highway, it will be the only crossing of more than 500 miles (800 km) between the Pacific coast and the interior of Mexico. The outline of this new highway is parallel to the famous "Espinazo del Diablo"; A narrow road that earned its nickname for the way it follows the orography of the peaks of the Sierra Madre Occidental. This dangerous road seems to be an endless torsion course, with very tight corners that sometimes the road almost bends to itself during the course.

By developing a safer, direct and faster route through the Sierra Madre Occidental, the Communications and Transport Secretariat (SCT) seeks to boost trade and tourism between the city of Durango, Torreón and Monterrey and the coastal city of Mazatlan. To achieve this goal, Mexican engineers were forced to design a highway with no fewer than 63 tunnels - nearly 10 times more than the largest number of tunnels in North America. For the fans of the bridges, the road is amazing with its parade of huge bridges of concrete beams. Including the Baluarte Bridge, there are 8 bridges that exceed 300 feet (90 meters) in height including Santa Lucia, Neverias, La Pinta, Chico, Botijas, Pueblo Nuevo and is the jewel of La Corona of the Carretero el Carrizo Project. Only Guiyang and Kunming Hurong in China and the A3 motorways of Italy has a larger collection of high bridges.
